David Girard Vineyards

In addition to our own Estate, we purchase a small amount of Syrah and Grenache from three other sites in El Dorado County, all farmed by Ron Mansfield. While sharing the same farmer, each site is quite different than our Estate; we've carefully chosen these vineyards to complement our own.

2014 Harvest Intern Dani Nelson (#interndan)
and Kara at Fenaughty

Fenaughty and Goldbud Vineyards
Apple Hill, CA

Elevation: 2800'

Grapes purchased: Syrah, Grenache

Soils: Apple Hill area soils are a fascinating volcanic clay loam. They are what geologists call an "unconformity", which means that they're a more recent deposit of material (volcanic rock) separated by time from what lies underneath (Sierra granite). Along with soils near Fiddletown, in Amador, they represent some of the only volcanic vineyards in our part of the Foothills.

Wines: Formerly the cornerstone of our Okei-San program, Fenaughty Syrah grapes now go into a vineyard-designate Reserve Syrah bottling. Grenache from both vineyards can be found in our 2012 Grenache Select.

The famous rockpile at Swansboro

Swansboro Vineyard, Placerville, CA

Elevation: 2600'

Grapes Purchased: Grenache

Soils: Swansboro's dramatic hilltop setting seems to be some sort of geologic epicenter, as parent material (rocks) of all sorts show up in the ground here. Loamy in texture, the soil contains schist, dark and light-colored slate, and typical granitic rocks.

Wines: Swansboro brings a graceful but sturdy structure -- like a dancer or figure skater -- and a distinct mineral character to Grenache. It was the sole vineyard in the now-famous 2010 Grenache Select, and is a major component of the 2012 Grenache Select. Rumor has it that it will factor heavily into the 2013, as well.
