New Year’s Resolutions with Mari Wells
I’m
listing all the countless things I enjoy in an effort to
eliminate them for the new year to meet my regular new years
resolution. Be healthier. I’ve mentally prepared
myself for the challenge and stocked up on nutritious foods
and snacks. I’ve been to the gym regularly and I’m
amped up on my new routine including aerobics, running, yoga,
and spinning. Just as I’m starting to feel like the
work is going to pay off, I remember all the good stuff I
was enjoying ‘last year.’ A beer or two
after a long day of harvest and a cheeseburger at the ski
hill would really hit the spot. However, after one
week of my new regime, I’m happy that one of my favorite
indulgences is good for me. WINE.
Everybody knows about “The French Paradox” and
that we should all drink more wine. Even knowing of this,
a customer in the tasting room spurred my curiosity. So,
I did some research and found out why this wonderful drink
can still be indulged (even after New Year’s.)
A few components in wine seem to keep you healthy. Phenols
are the substances in wine which include tannins and color
pigments. Resveratrol is a phenol found in red wine and grapes. It
has been shown to prevent cardiovascular disease, minimize
the risk of osteoporosis and slow certain types of cancer
cells. It seems that red wines have the most resveratrol
content, followed by Rose wines. That’s good
news for us!
As Plato said, "Nothing more excellent or valuable
than wine was ever granted by the gods to man.” Cheers,
to a happy AND healthy New Year!
