Meet Winemaker Mari Wells

Mari Wells started college working on a science degree, which eventually became the science of winemaking and enology.  She graduated from UC Davis in 2000, eagerly beginning her career by working two vintages at the Gloria Ferrer Champagne caves.  Mari then traveled to New Zealand to follow her passion for pinot noir, landing in Central Otago and working a vintage at Chard Farm winery near Queenstown.  In 2001 she studied under Merry Edwards, pinot noir guru, in the Russian River Valley.

New to Rhones? Our Rhone Character Guide will help.

New Additions to the DGV Tasting Room:

2004 Grenache ($16)
2005 Coeur du Terroir Blanc ($22)

These new wines have been a big hit in the tasting room.  Both provide light, balanced flavors that are perfect for warm weather food pairings.  If you have not yet tried a true white Rhone blend, the Coeur du Terroir Blanc will be a treat for your pallet; composed of Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier, Grenache Blanc and Rolle grapes from our very own small lot vineyard.  It is crisp, fruity and acidic with an aroma that lifts the senses.

2005 Viognier -  Another vibrant and aromatic El Dorado wine that truly rivals its French counterparts.  This limited release will be sent out in the next wine club shipment (first week of August), with a pre-order opportunity for club members before it is available in the tasting room.  Limit six bottles per person.

2004 Coeur du Terroir Rouge - As the sister wine of our recently introduced Coeur du Terroir Blanc, we are expecting great things from this blend.  The traditional Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre blend is the first from our estate vines and presents an outstanding complexity with hints of dark cherries and earth.  Release date TBA.

ALL ABOUT GRENACHE

Grenache.  From the vineyard to the bottle, the first vintage is here.

Grenache, also known as Grenache Noir to distinguish it from its white counterpart Grenache Blanc, is the most widely planted variety in the southern Rhone Valley in France.  It is most often blended (with Syrah and Mourvedre in France and Australia, and with Tempranillo in Spain), but reaches its peak in the wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  The red wines of Chateauneuf may contain 35% to nearly 100% Grenache....
