Rhone Star Newsletter

Welcome to our E-Newsletter!  This newsletter will provide you with more information about the wines you love and what we do differently at David Girard Vineyards to ensure a classic, top quality product.  Our love for Rhones grows stronger each season, and we are sure yours will too as we introduce some of the major backbone varietals this summer.  Don’t know much about southern French wines?  Feel intimidated by those long, foreign pronunciations?  Take a look at the character guide to see which of our Rhone varietals suit you best and how to sound like a pro in the tasting room.
Rhone Character Guide

As a new winery, we would first like to introduce our team at David Girard Vineyards.  Learn about the owner and vineyard manager in this issue and the winemaker, tasting room staff, and other people behind the scenes in the next issues.

Who is David Girard?

As a boy growing up on the outskirts of Detroit, David Girard thought more about hockey, snow, and auto plants than vines and grapes.  But after working in his father’s gas station through high school and college, a stint as an Army enlistee, a Ford manager and accountant, and armed with an M.B.A. from Wayne State University and a law degree from the University of Michigan, a California perspective seemed like a good idea.

In The Tasting Room

For those of you that had the chance to snag a final bottle of 2004 Rose, please enjoy it because we are officially SOLD OUT.  Luckily we have another estate blend on the rise in our Coeur de Terroir Blanc, to be released on June 25th for the Summer Solstice event.  This wine combines Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Viognier and Rolle, all grown at the DGV estate (take a peek at the vineyard across from our entrance gates to see some of the vines).  We have tasted this wine against its French rivals and it shined through the competition, showing vibrant floral aromas and a strong characteristic finish.

The first DGV Estate Grenache, one of our premier Rhone varietals, will also be released June 25th.  Anyone who tasted this barrel sample at the Valentine Event will be delighted to know it has held up to all expectations.  The beautiful cherry aromas and smooth tannins give it a wonderful compatibility to several summer dishes.

Attention Wine Club Members

Please be sure to introduce yourself to the new Tasting Room staff joining us on the weekends, let them know you are a member to get a 20% discount and VIP treatment for your friends and family.

Mark your calendars for the August “The Perfect Blend” Wine Club Event, where you can vote for your favorite Rhone blend before we bottle.  We will have various mixtures of our estate Grenache, Syrah & Mourvedre straight from the barrel and ready to taste after an evening vineyard tour!

The next wine club shipment will include the 2005 Viognier (100% varietal) and 2004 DGV Grenache.  This is a limited production Viognier, released first to wine club members.  The limit is 6 bottles per person upon ordering, as only 50 cases are available.  Both new wines bring exciting new flavors, aromas and spices to the David Girard Vineyards wine list.

Grower's Corner

By Ron Mansfield

I have been growing wine grapes in El Dorado County for 27 years.  I have the good fortune to be the grape grower (vineyard manager) for David Girard Vineyards.  From time to time in this newsletter I will write about growing grapes at our vineyard.  My desire in relating my experiences as a grape grower is to help you better understand what wine really means to us at David Girard.  My hope is that in some small way my words will help us build a comfortable and lasting relationship with you, our visitors and customers.

As an introduction in this first newsletter I present the following general vineyard information....    Read More
