In the Cellar With Mari Wells

Coeur du Terroir (Currr-dew-tear-wah)
We created our first estate Rhone blends to express the intensity of the varietals, the balance found in blending, and ultimately the Coeur du Terroir.
In French Coeur du Terroir means heart of the earth.  As language doesn’t always translate directly word for word, it really means something deeper.  It means the very core of all environmental components that make our vineyard at 741 Cold Springs Road the home of the rhones. Our Coeur du Terroir blends represent the passion of winemaking that connects the land to the people. They are the very best expression of our earth and our vineyard, symbolized by the gold seals....

Wine Club

The current club release (ready now) introduces our long-awaited 2004 Mourvedre and our flagship 2004 Coeur du Terroir Rouge.  The big fruit and textured mid pallet of this Rhone blend are framed by well placed tannins; it will be a great cellar wine for years to come.  Those of you who had barrel samples of the Mourvedre last year will be happy to know that the wine is everything you’ve been waiting for, so come and taste it again as a finished product.  Special thanks to Dedrick’s Main Street Cheese of Placerville for providing the delicious pairings for the wine & cheese release event!

Attention Wine Club Members:
MEDITERRANEAN CRUISE, APRIL 2007!

David Girard Vineyards is excited to announce the first of what we plan as an annual event for our wine club members.

In keeping with the quality you have come to expect from David Girard, we have selected one of the world's top cruise lines - OCEANIA CRUISES, known for its affordable luxury.

The cruise we have selected is a 10 day Mediterranean cruise aboard the Insignia, sailing from Barcelona, Spain to Athens, Greece and stopping in many gorgeous Mediterranean locales along the way.

Reservations and deposit must be in by November 30, 2006

All the Details...

Members of the Month:
Garrett and Kay Boyd (October) & Phil and Diane Emond (November)
The Boyds have done a tremendous job of gathering information and coordinating the DGV Wine Club Mediterranean Cruise of 2007.  We want to thank them for all their hard work and extra efforts to get things up and running.  Finally Garrett can tell the difference between Amanda and Mari on the phone - a feat only few have mastered!
The Emonds have been the dynamic duo of fun and laughter whenever they pop into the tasting room; they’ve even provided entertainment for a previous wine club event.  Diane has taken Mari under her wing on the golf course, teaching her how to swing a club when she’s not in the cellar and also helped with this month’s wine & cheese pairing event.

Grower's Corner

By Ron Mansfield

Mourvedre: From Chateau de Beaucastel to David Girard Vineyards

Mourvedre is native to Spain, where it is known as Monastrell and is second only to Grenache in importance.  From the Spanish town of Murviedro, near Valencia, Mourvedre was brought to Provence in the late Middle Ages where, prior to the phylloxera invasion at the end of the 19th century, it was the dominant varietal.  The phylloxera invasion was particularly devastating to Mourvedre.  Mourvedre proved to be very difficult to graft with existing phylloxera-resistant rootstocks.  Thus, when vineyards were replanted, growers in Chateauneuf-du-Pape and other southern Rhone areas chose to replant to other varieties that were easier to graft, such as Grenache....
